Swimmers humiliated seriously injured servicemen undergoing treatment at Headley Court Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre by objecting to their presence in Leatherhead Leisure Centre swimming pool.

A group of Headley Court veterans, some who had lost limbs during active service in Iraq and Afghanistan, had to leave the pool after being told by a couple of swimmers they had no right to be there because they had not paid. Another group of servicemen remained in the water.

The incident at the swimming pool took place when an assistant lifeguard moved lane ropes to get ready for the regular Headley Court session.

A woman swimmer complained that it reduced the room in the pool for other members of the public who had paid an entry fee while the soldiers were allowed in free. She was backed by another member of the public.

She then spoke directly to the Headley Court physical training instructor who decided to remove his group while another continued with their session.

Mole Valley District Council is so appalled at her behaviour that it is expected to pass a resolution this week extending the free swimming concessions for servicemen to their families, who will also be allowed free use of the soft play area at the centre and free entry to Dorking Halls cinema.

Councillor Tim Hall, leader of Mole Valley District Council, said: "There appears to have been a rare incident where two members of the public queried the provision of lanes of the swimming pool for Headley Court.

"This was an isolated incident, where some insensitive comments were made by these members of the public, directed at some of our customers from Headley Court.

"As we live in a democracy which encourages freedom of speech, we cannot legislate against what particular individuals say."

A spokesman for the MOD said: "We are disappointed that a small number people objected to the closure of swimming lanes so that patients of Headley Court could use them.

"This is not typical of the support given to military by the public in Leatherhead."

Ironically, the incident at the leisure centre happened shortly before Sir Richard Dannatt, head of the British Army and Chief of the General Staff, visited Headley Court on Friday to launch the Arkensis Group appeal, part of the £5million Help for Heroes appeal to build a swimming pool and other rehabilitation facilities at Headley.

"The people who come here are very special, some are injured in training but many are here because of injuries they have sustained on operations.

"People here are so focused - they want to get better and they want to get back to work," he said.

More than £1 million has been raised so far for the appeal.

Some of these guys paid for the use of these facilities with more than money, Mrs! Rubbish like you is nothing new though !

Some people are unbelievable, it's almost laughable at how pathetic, selfish and ignorant these people are!

Have they forgotten that these people risk their lives for us, and it seems these 'FEW members of the public' can't give up their swimming lanes for a while?
UNBELIEVABLE!

These people should be ashamed of the way they have treated our countries heroes!

What's wrong with some people? Does she also go to Thorpe Park and complain that special-needs kids on a charity daytrip should be booted out because they didn't pay?

Anyway, how did she know for sure that the servicemen hadn't paid? For all she knew, Headley Court may have been paying an annual fee for use of the facilities. I don't think they are - but would the rest of us make such an assumption?

I am totally disgusted at those two women. They should be ashamed of themselves. These men put their lives on the line and it's a good job we don't all show our thanks and respect like that, because maybe they wouldn't bother - then where would we be?

I am appalled by the actions of this woman and the other person who backed her up. It is absolutely disgusting but I am afraid it is just an example of some people in society today. Who are just selfish and insensitive to other peoples needs because they basically do not give a sh#t. If I was in that pool, I would have given her a peice of my mind! I feel so sorry for those poor men who must have felt so humiliated especially after having to deal with whatever injuries they have. If the woman involved is reading this, I would like to know your reasoning behind how you can act like such a vile animal.

With all due respect, special needs people should have special needs facilities.
Restraining normal swimming lanes for special needs at busy times is not the best thing to do. Having said that, this should have been raised through proper channels not in this insensitive and appalling manner.

This story has been reported around the world shaming us as a nation not just for the stupid and hurtful words of this woman but for the fact that our boys do not have there own facilities. This Government in my view is as guilty of disrespecting our boys as much or if not more than this woman, the boys did there job for this government, now let the government do there job for them.

I read about this in the Sun and whoever that woman is she is disgusting and ought to be ashamed of herself. What a socially inept cretin.
How can she complain about something like that? Had she no sense of morality? These men knowingly put their lives in danger for a cause they themselves may not even support, and what do they get? Horrific injuries and a life hindered beyond comprehension. This woman whoever she is, is a disgrace and absolute embarrassment to British people.

I disagree, replace
"seriously injured servicemen",
for something like
"disabled Somali refugees",
and then see how much of a democracy/
freedom of speech state we live in.

I agree they shouldn't have been in the pool, our servicemen and women deserve better. The government should be ashamed of there treatment of them and be doing everything they can to support them not expecting them to risk their lives then leaving their care to others. As for the cretins that complained, they make me sick, I hope they are barred for discrimination, how dare they humiliate others like that. Good on the leisure centre for extending their generousity to the service families.

These servicemen should have had the pool to themselves. A small price to pay for some privacy for the seriously injured in OUR name. WE elect the government in our DEMOCRATIC society. These guys and gals know the risk and are prepared to take them for Queen and Country, and very poor pay and conditions. The least we can do is show our gratitude. I hope all the contributors to this debate have gone straight to 'Help for Heroes' online and made a donation for a pool to be built at Headley Court. A disgrace we should be asking for charity to build it though. Our Govt should be doing it for their troops.

simon Buckley, West Wales says...

I am sure that the women at the heart of this contraversey have realised what complete fools they have been; and if one tries to see that some good has come out of it, it is this, that people know of the charity, that they know of the inadeqacies of the Headley centre, and that those of us who believe that Heroes can make a difference have written cheques and got on with it.

I hope that one can forgive the women, and really now get behind this great charity, and raise the £ 5 million they need to make it happen.

These men are far braver than me,need no sympathy, they dont want it, merely the opportunity to get on with their lives.

Lets forget the women, and think of these guys and what we can do for them.

I can't beleive these people, i am disgusted that our heros were asked to leave a swimming pool. What a smack in the face, why do our squaddies bother even trying to fight for our freedom if they get degraded n that manner. What is our country coming to when once upon a time long ago our soldiers were loved by the public. I am a serving soldiers wife and my husband is fighting in Afghanistan for the freedom of this country, and doing a mighty fine job of it too, these mindless people should take time out to realise the tough job they do on operational tours. It makes me sick to the stomach and not at all proud to say im British, Especially when you see how proud and suppotive the US public give to their serving soldiers

Half agree!? TOSH! I say Name and Shame! What people forget is how hard it can be to be in the forces. It not only shows us up as a nation but also shames us as members of the human race. Injured military personnel may not have suitable facilities which is where public facilities should be available at NO COST as they and their families have already paid a high price for protecting this nation from a way of life that we do not agree with. Meanwhile a small minority of this nation are self centred. The two that left the pool, shame on you! you should have stayed as you had nothing to be ashamed about. This has made me soooooo angry and yet so shameful. I dont particularly care if the two women now feel shame. They are not worth my time and effort. Boys, dont you listen to any negative comments! You do a fantastic job under difficult circumstances and rarely with full equipment. Love you all!

If the people who complained about the lads and lasses excersing in the pool should make sure that they give a donation to the help for heroes appeal which is raising money to build a pool amongest other facilities at Headley Court, then they won't have to worry about sharing their precious swimming pool.

Ive spent time in Headley Court last year, after being wounded in Iraq. I also been to the Leisure Centre in Leatherhead for swimming scessions. I bet the the two women in question feels as though the world owes them one. Probably don't have many friends too!

Stephen Napier, Corby, UK says...
1:05am Fri 14 Dec 07

Absolutely disgusted with this woman, truly livid and disgusted. Anyone who knows this woman, please name her so the country can shame her.
The courageous men and women of our Armed Forces wholeheartedly do their job 110%, regardless of their thoughts and views of what is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan, and they defend our country from the threat of terrorism and fight for our freedom. The very freedom this heartless woman takes for granted and uses to destroy the chances our wounded soldiers, wounded in the line of duty defending our freedom, from making a recovery.
How dare this evil woman bark the filth at our soldiers, she has no right to open her foul mouth in this manner and a person like that does not deserve to enjoy the freedom that countless British soldiers have fought and died for over the many years.
An act like this should carry a punishment and should be classed as a form of Treason as there was an insult and mockery of the Queen's soldiers in public.

Mike, Lancs says...

I think that this woman should be banned from the swimming pool. She is probably the type of person who harasses a soldier who wears his uniform in public. I remember a friend of mine got back from Iraq a couple of years ago and he was being abused by members of the british public, one of which spat on him. Its not the only time I have heard this happen either. Makes me sick

Lawrence, Cheshire says...
6:42pm Sun 16 Dec 07

The actions of these women is absolutely disgusting. What a terrible, awful thing to do to these soldiers. The soldiers should have their own purpose built pool and not have to share with unpleasant, nasty people. I am astonished at what is happening to the people in the UK. Whether it is right or wrong British soldiers need to be supported and looked after. The government and the British people have let them down very, very badly. They are underpaid, underequipped, badly housed and abandoned when they come back. I have seen American soldiers being spontaneously applauded at Atlanta aiport by their own countrymen as they go off to Iraq. What a difference compared to the people of Britain. One thing I don;t object to paying taxes for is to look after our armed forces.
